The project

In Catbalogan, plastic waste severely affects the environment and local livelihoods, especially fisheries, on which many families depend. At the same time, the region is regularly exposed to typhoons, flooding and earthquakes. For many people, this means living between economic uncertainty and recurring natural disasters.

The project “Waste for Hope” responds with an integrated solution: the construction of an innovative, multifunctional Bubble House. The building combines a Learning Academy for environmental education, arts, music and digital skills with an integrated Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Children, youth and adults learn how to reduce plastic waste and create new sources of income through upcycling, for example by transforming plastic into furniture or protective barriers. Digital learning opportunities open up additional prospects, such as working as a virtual assistant, creating income opportunities within the region

The resilient, fast-to build structure will be equipped with solar panels and serve as an evacuation center in times of disaster. As a pilot project, it is designed to become a model for sustainable development and resilient communities at national level.

In November 2013, shortly after the devastating Yolanda storm, I flew to the Philippines to help out. At that time, many said my help was too small and my help didn’t make much difference, but in reality I was where I always wanted to be, in a place where my help was really needed. Since that time I have always been involved and try to help as much as I can. That’s why this year I’m especially excited to be working with help alliance, where we’ll be helping out more than 3,000 students with their learning materials to help ease the financial burden on parents and give students an equal opportunity to learn.
